Frequently Asked Questions
This site is intended to provide help for computer users
of all proficiency levels.
Even if you are very proficient, it never hurts to revisit
some of the common tweaks and terms.
There is so much stuff we have to know today and we
just keep cramming more and more into our heads
(which isn’t a bad thing - if we’re not challenging ourselves
we’ll never improve). It never hurts to revisit things.
Sometimes we forget the simpler, elemental stuff we
learned to do a long time ago when our old computer
So even if you know a lot about computing, sign up and
contribute some ideas or write some columns. We’d love
to get your input! And your input will be duly noted.
What type of information will be offered?
I work in technology supporting several hundred people who use computers. My problem is, my boss wants me to put a lot of the stuff I do helping people onto the website at work, but there isn’t time to do that. So I decided to put it on my own website and help a whole lot more folks.
In doing that, I’ve come to realize that most people just scratch the surface of the functionality of the programs they use (in this case I’m referring to MS Office - Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). With just a little bit more information, they can exponentially expand their effectiveness and efficiency at doing things they currently do. I’ll cover things I show a lot of people I support every day (which they’ve found to be very useful).
Toward those ends, the tutorials will be short YouTube videos on how to do thing with Microsoft Office - the ribbon settings and tweaks, how to do things to help you become a Power User.
Also, lots of other programs are available for free that can help us realize tremendous gains in efficiency at doing things we have to do every day at work or at home. It just helps to have someone who has to keep their head in the game at all times to use as a resource.
Who is the typical user?
If you use a computer at work, at home, or if you volunteer for any kind of group or service, odds are you’ve run across a situation where you’d wished you knew how to do something on the computer. Some little task or trick to make some job easier. Maybe we can help you.
Will there be courses offered?
There will be some structured learning available later this year. We plan to cover:
- The finer points of MS PowerPoint and how to use it (and how it is often mis-used) as a tool for presentations.
- Spreadsheet development will also be covered later in the year. Spreadsheets are an absolutely incredible whose usefulness is limited only by the imagination and ability of the user.
How often will you be sending emails?
You can expect to get one email a week - no more often than that.
And that will just give you an idea of what’s been added to the site that week.
